Divergent
One of the most famous and well known movies of 2014 is of course Divergent. Divergent is a story set in a futuristic Chicago where all the people in this city are divided into factions. All of these different factions have different ways of living that make them distinctive. Abnegation (the Selfless), Erudite (the Intelligent), Dauntless (the Brave), Amity (the Peaceful) and Candor (the Honest).
I personally loved the movie. I think it was a really good representation of the book. Although they obviously weren’t able to put every little detail from the book in the movie, they adapted the story really well. The film really captured the intesity and urgency of the book especially towards the ending fight.
One thing I particularly liked was the use of the original dialogue for the beginning and the end. I was a really good choice as it showed a clear beginning and a clear end. This technique was also a good reminder that this movie is based off of a book and it gives credit to the author Veronica Roth.
Now I am a really big sucker for a good romance story and I simply love the way that they portayed this in the movie. It seemed very raw and almost harsh when they were surrounded by other people, but they would leave little hints and have a small moment where they would cave in and reveal a small hint of something happening between them. But when they were together, you could tell that a certain stress or burden had been lifted as they were now able to express their feelings without being caught by an initiate or even worse, a Dauntless leader. The relationship between Tris, played by Shailene Woodley, and Four/Tobias, played by Theo James, was captured beautifully by the two amazing actors. They were able to fully understand their characters not as just a role, but as a real person and this enabled them to improvise and make decisions as if they were the character themselves. Loving to act and perform, I personally know how hard it is to fully get into a character and I believe that I myself have only been able to do this once. It is very hard for an actor to connect so well with a character and these two in particular presented them perfectly.
The only negative thing I really have to say about this film, is the fact that they cut out a very iconic scene and character, and by that I am talking about Edward. They do touch on the character lightly, but he is only seen as another initiate. Due to the fact that the movie was already very long, they decided to cut out the scene where Peter stabs Edward in the eye whilst he is asleep. This is a very well known scene and many of the Divergent fans were disappointed. But they should not be upset for too long as rumour has it, that Edwards story will be discussed in the Insurgent movie which is currently being filmed.
Can’t wait for the new installment of the Divergent series’, Insurgent to be released in cinemas in 2015.
