Tyler Oakley is an American YouTube personality and advocate for LGBT youth, presenting on topics such as queer politics and pop culture. He was born in March 1989 in Michigan, United States and began making videos in 2007; his most viewed video has been viewed over 6,222,620 times on YouTube. He has received awards such as Teen Choice Award for Choice Web collaboration and Teen Choice Award for Choice Web Star in 2014.
Tyler Oakley supports The Trevor Project, an organization for the prevention of suicide in LGBT youth. Since 2011 he has co-hosted TrevorLIVE, the charity’s annual red carpet event. Throughout March 2014 he conducted a birthday fundraiser for the Trevor Project to celebrate his 25th birthday, using Prizeo (an internet platform that allows people to raise money through prize-based fan campaigns). Initially he aimed to raise $150,000 and when the campaign closed at the end of March he had raised over $525,700.
Tyler is an active user of social media with over 5,200,000 subscribers on YouTube, 2.97 million Twitter followers, over 2,500,000 Instagram followers and 1,800,000 Facebook likes. Due to his success with social media, he was also given the opportunity to meet President Barack Obama at the White House. He is known for hosting many popular events such as Insider Tonight and The Fault In Our Stars Live Stream Event. As of March 2013, Tyler co-hosts a weekly pop-culture news update called “Top That!” with Becca Frucht for Popsugar (an online media network of websites for girls).
