Help! I am attending my cousin’s wedding next fortnight and I don’t know what to wear! It’s going to be my first wedding - can you help me?
From Ella, by email
Hey Ella,
That’s so exciting! I remember when I attended my first wedding, and how nervous I was. It was my brother’s wedding and my outfit was a total disaster! I wore a white dress and it was so embarrassing. Everybody was thinking (and saying) “how could she wear that?” I thought the dress was fine to wear when I bought it... But it turned out to be nothing but a learning experience.
Essentially, you shouldn't be dressed as the bride (white or full-length formal dress) or for her funeral (black). The bride is the centerpiece of the wedding, so don’t try to upstage her. Imagine you’re the bride, how would you feel if your cousin walked in wearing the same dress, or better? Similarly, the bride doesn't want to be reminded that this is the end of her single life, so nothing black and nothing skimpy.
I would recommend wearing a more formal, knee-length dress in pastel colours, floral or other prints. Wear low-key jewellery that you love and make you feel beautiful. In terms of hair and makeup, again, don’t upstage the bride. Stick to natural makeup, nothing too garish. For your hair, make sure it’s clean and tidy. I would recommend a simple updo or a braid.
Shoes are definitely every girl’s love, so they are a big part of the outfit. You need to be prepared for any type of wedding, in any condition or setting - rainy, boiling hot, cold, inside or in the back garden. I would recommend a pair of stylish wedges or ballet flats in a neutral colour that goes well with your dress (black, grey or beige).
I hope this advice has helped and have a great time at your cousin’s wedding. You’ll look amazing!
